The International experts have suggested that Delhi’s mohalla bus service has to be colour-coded, with each bus operating on shorter and much more simple routes and that too with high frequency and linking with the metro stations.
Delhi transport department headed by Kailash Gahlot had tied up with the experts for the consultation on Monday.
The mohalla bus scheme, announced in the budget last month, has its aim to deploy small routes of electric buses on many colony routes, which are about nine-metre-long.
The scheme is set to go on floors in two months with a plan to launch hundred buses and afterwards, a roll-out of 2,180 such vehicles is in the making by 2025.
“The service also should have a simple fixed fare, with free transfers from the existing public transport system, if possible,” said Gahlot.
Sam Zimmerman, from World Bank, had earlier discussed that the circulation of bus service in Washington DC since 2019 that is similar to that off proposed mohalla bus service. Moreover, as per various international experts, the overall time should be under 30 minutes.
“Buses are the backbone of any public transport system, offering a level of flexibility that other systems, like rail, cannot match. However, for many years, cities have failed to harness this advantage….. The mohalla service could be a potential game-changer in a city’s overall progress.”, said Amit Bhatt, The International Council of Clean Transport managing director for India.
