Amarinder Singh refutes reports on replacing the incumbent Governor of Maharastra

In light of Bhagat Singh Koshyari’s desire to step down as Governor of Maharashtra, several media reports claim that the BJP leader and former Chief Minister of Punjab, Captain Amarinder Singh, is likely to be appointed as the new Governor of Maharastra.

This news came after controversial remarks made by the incumbent Governor of Maharastra Koshyari. Koshyari commented about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj being an “old icon” while speaking at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, which sparked controversy.

Koshyari, who faced widespread criticism and calls to resign in Maharashtra, recently stated that he informed Prime Minister Narendra Modi of his desire to be relieved of his duties.

In a tweet, the Raj Bhavan said, “During the recent visit of the Hon’ble Prime Minister to Mumbai, I have conveyed to him my desire to be discharged of all political responsibilities and to spend the remainder of my life in reading, writing and other activities. I have always received love and affection from the Hon’ble Prime Minister, and I hope to receive the same in this regard.”

However, BJP leader Amarinder Singh while refuting the media reports addressed the claims were “purely speculative”.

Responding to the speculations for consideration for the post of the Governor of Maharastra, the former Chief Minister of Punjab said, “This is purely speculative. Nobody has contacted me. I know nothing about it. Nobody mentioned anything. I have already informed the Prime Minister, wherever he wants, at whatever position I am at his disposal.”

Amarinder Singh joined BJP after he was removed unceremoniously by Congress as the Chief Minister of Punjab in 2021.
