The Manipur government intends to reopen colleges starting on September 6.
In X, the chief minister N Biren Singh said, “Pleased to share that over the past month, school attendance for students from class 1 to 12 has surged to an impressive 90% as we gradually get back to normalcy.” He added that the State Government is committed to always putting education at the top of the priority list, notwithstanding the challenging times we have recently experienced. Schools resumed operations on July 5 after the state experienced ethnic violence that started on May 3. Since ethnic violence between the Meitei and Koki-Zo communities erupted in the state on May 3, when a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the hill districts to oppose the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, at least 160 people have been killed and several hundred injured.
In Manipur, there are around 4,521 schools. The violence uprooted some 50,650 people from various areas, who are now being housed in 350 camps that have been set up in classrooms, offices, and auditoriums. In Mizoram, almost 12000 people have sought refuge.
