PM Modi emphasizes individual role in climate change mitigation at World Bank conference

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasized the importance of behavioral change and people’s participation in combating climate change during a speech at the World Bank-organized conference on the impact of behavioral change on climate change. He stated that an idea becomes a mass movement when it moves from “discussion tables to dinner tables,” and called for collective efforts from families and individuals to make a positive impact on the environment.

PM  Modi highlighted the need to raise awareness among people that their everyday choices and actions can contribute to the fight against climate change. He mentioned the “Mission Life” program, launched by him and the U.N. Secretary General in October last year, as an initiative aimed at democratizing the battle against climate change.

The Prime Minister commended the efforts of the people of India in driving positive change in areas such as improving sex ratio, cleanliness drives, and adoption of LED bulbs. He stated that people-driven efforts have resulted in significant reductions in carbon emissions, with nearly 370 million LED bulbs being sold in India, avoiding nearly 39 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

Mr. Modi’s speech highlighted the importance of grassroots involvement and behavioral change in addressing the global challenge of climate change, and called for collective action at the individual and family level to make a meaningful impact on the environment.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also highlighted the significant contributions of farmers in India towards micro-irrigation and water conservation during his speech at the World Bank-organized conference. He stated that farmers in India have ensured the coverage of nearly seven hundred thousand hectares of farmland by micro-irrigation, aligning with the mantra of ‘Per Drop More Crop’, which has resulted in substantial water savings.

He also mentioned that these efforts are part of the broader Mission Life program, which focuses on various domains such as making local bodies environmentally friendly, saving water, saving energy, reducing waste and e-waste, promoting healthy lifestyles, and adopting natural farming, including the promotion of millets.
