Should PM Modi pay a visit to Ukraine, is Ukraine willing to invite?

Deputy foreign minister of Ukraine, Emine Dzhaparova, who is on a four day visit to New Delhi has said, “We believe India should be engaged and involved in the Ukraine issue to a great extent.”

Dzhaparova has claimed on Monday that Kyiv wanted New Delhi to be more involved in helping resolve the ongoing conflict with Russia and has sought a visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other top officials.

“We believe intensification of political dialogue on the highest level is first step towards this big goal. My president is requesting a phone conversation with the Prime Minister. We are looking forward to welcome him in Kyiv one day,” she said

Emine Dzhaparov has also told CNBC TV18 broadcaster in an interview that Kyiv also expected India to invite Ukrainian officials to the G20 events and meetings to have a more friendly relation and intensify political dialogue with Kyiv.

Ever since Russia lashed a war on Ukraine, India have maintained a neutral stand and have abstained from voting in the UN ever since. Moreover, New Delhi has not been as critical of Moscow as others for its invasion and has even ramped up the buying of Russian oil, as far as others have banned it and put sanctions on the Russian Federation.

However, Modi has told Russian President Vladimir Putin in September that today’s time is “not the era of war” at the SCO Summit in Samarkand.

“We only think it is crucial to diversify all of the resources, not only energy but also military resources. When you are dependent from Russia, they always use this blackmail instrument”, Dzhaparova said

Furthermore, Dzhaparova will meet India’s deputy national security adviser and a junior foreign minister during her visit and address a world affairs think tank.
