‘If someone did nice, it doesn’t mean…’: Assam Congress leader dismissed over harassment allegations

Angkita Dutta, who comes from a family of Congress members, was kicked out of the party on Saturday after accusing Srinivas of harassment. Ex-Assam Indian Youth Congress president Angkita Dutta lashed out on Monday at the organisation’s national president, Srinivasa BV, for allegedly harassing her, saying the leader cannot be excused even if he has done good work.

The truth will be revealed; BV Srinivas is the target of the allegations, not the party. According to Dutta, even if someone accomplishes good deeds under COVID, it does not excuse them from their crimes. Meanwhile, the Assam police issued a summons to Srinivas BV on Sunday, ordering him to appear at the Dispur police station in Guwahati on May 2 in connection with the alleged offences.

Dutta, who comes from a family of Congress members, was kicked out of the party on Saturday after accusing Srinivas of harassment. She was banished for six years because of “anti-party activities.” In a series of tweets, she made similar charges against Srinivas. She claimed she contacted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi about the situation, but no investigation was launched.

The Dispur police station received a complaint from Dutta last week alleging that Srinivas had been “harassing and torturing her for the last six months by making sexist comments, using slang words, and also threatening her with dire consequences if she continues to complain against him to the senior party office bearers.”  She added that during the party’s plenary meeting in Raipur in February, Srinivas had jeered her and threatened to ruin her political career.

Congress leader Randeep Surjewala said that Himanta Biswa Sarma has become “infamous for his antics to stay in the news,” while dismissing the accusations against Srinivas as “propaganda” and denouncing the police’s actions. In addition, he urged people to ignore Sarma since he was “trying to outbid” Union Home Minister Amit Shah for the position.

Sarma refuted Surjewala’s assertion, claiming that the Assam Police were following the law and that it was unreasonable to hold him responsible for the “lack of a safe environment within the Congress party for female workers.”
