PM Modi Asserts No Space for Discrimination in India as Manipur Struggles with Ongoing Turmoil

Narendra Modi

The northeastern state of Manipur has recently been dealing with political upheaval and societal unrest, highlighting the ongoing difficulties the area continues to endure. In light of this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has addressed the matter, highlighting the value of a discrimination-free, united, and inclusive India. This study seeks to clarify the situation in the state by analysing PM Modi’s remarks in light of the ongoing challenges in Manipur.

Manipur, a state in northeastern India, has had to contend with a number of problems, such as political disputes, ethnic tensions, and calls for more autonomy. Due to these difficulties, some segments of the population have experienced intermittent violence, social upheaval, and a deep sense of unhappiness. These tensions have been made worse by discrimination, which is a serious issue that needs to be addressed right away.

In a speech to the nation on June 22, 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged the problems in Manipur and reiterated his commitment to developing a society free from prejudice. He emphasised that everyone deserves equal rights and that discrimination has no place in India, regardless of their origin, ethnicity, or location of residence.

PM Modi emphasised the initiatives done by the administration to solve the issues Manipur and other northeastern states are facing. These programmes include construction activities aimed at enhancing connectivity, education, healthcare, and employment prospects. The Northeast is included in the pledge made by the prime minister’s administration to ensure the overall development of all areas.

While the speech made by PM Modi shows his certainty and dedication to a diverse India, it is important to acknowledge the ongoing difficulties Manipur continues to confront. There are still rare acts of violence, demonstrations, and calls for more autonomy in the state. Economic inequalities and the concerns of different ethnic groups have created a feeling of marginalisation that needs to be appropriately addressed.

The government’s reaffirmation of its commitment to an inclusive and discrimination-free India in PM Modi’s address is a step in the right direction. Nevertheless, it is imperative to put these ideas into practise, especially in areas like Manipur that continue to experience social upheaval and political unrest. The government may seek to create a more peaceful and prosperous Manipur, which will produce a truly inclusive India, by addressing the root causes, encouraging economic development, and having meaningful conversations.
