Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal took to Twitter to post a letter that urged the centre to intervene, as the capital is facing flood-like situations. Delhi is susceptible to the fear of flooding as the water level rises to 207.49, which is the maximum in the last 45 years.
In the letter to Home Minister Amit Shah, Kejriwal wrote, “There has been no rain in Delhi since the last 3 days. The water level in the Yamuna is rising not because of Rain but because water is released in Hathnikund Barrage (Haryana) at a large volume.”
The Central Water Commission estimated that the water level might rise to 207.75, which is concerning for the capital. Kejriwal pointed out that the Flood will send a wrong message to the world as the G20 summit is scheduled in Delhi momentarily. Moreover, he urged the centre to control the water release speed in Hathnikund Barrage. The CM hosted an emergency meeting earlier on Wednesday morning.
Arvind Kejriwal confronted the media in a press conference in which he advised the people living in low-lying areas to evacuate as soon as possible with all their necessary belongings. Kejriwal also made sure that all the basic amenities, like food and toilets, are provided in the camps. Kejriwal told the reporters that “I met all the District Magistrate and asked them to convert all the schools into relief camps, so that people can access basic facilities like toilets.”
What did the Delhi Government do to prevent casualties?
Thousands of people were evacuated from Yamuna Khadar, Mayur Vihar in Delhi as the river swelled and breached the evacuation mark. The Delhi Police imposed Section 144 in flood-prone areas, Preventing gatherings of four or more people. Places like Majnu ka Tila, Yamuna Bazar, Boat Club, Usmanpur, and Badarpur Khadar are already affected because of the rising level of the river.
