‘Keralam’ from Kerala: Assembly passes unanimous decision renaming state

A motion encouraging the Centre to rename the state as “Keralam” in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution and all official records was unanimously approved by the Kerala Assembly.

Pinarayi Vijayan, the chief minister of Kerala, submitted the resolution in the Assembly on Wednesday because the Congress-led UDF opposition made no changes or adjustments to it.

According to the Chief Minister, the name of the state is “Keralam” in Malayalam. Since the beginning of the national freedom fight, the need for the Malayalam-speaking groups to merge into one Kerala has become increasingly apparent. However, the First Schedule of the Constitution lists Kerala as the name of our state.

“This Assembly requests in unanimity that the Union Government take prompt action to alter it as required by Article 3 of the Constitution.
