Samajwadi Party Takes Commanding Lead in Ghosi Bypoll

In an important development, the Samajwadi Party (SP) holds a sizable lead over the governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the September 5 by-election for the Ghosi assembly seat. The SP’s Sudhakar Singh is now leading the BJP’s Dara Singh Chauhan in the vote count, which started at 8 a.m. on Friday. To arrive at a decision, a total of 34 rounds of counting will be performed.

The resignation of Chauhan, the currently-elected representative for the constituency, made the by-election in Ghosi necessary. Following his switch from the BJP to the SP in January of the previous year, just before the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, Chauhan resigned as an MLA and rejoined the BJP in July. Despite the fact that the saffron party won the general election, Chauhan was able to defeat Ghosi.

The Samajwadi Party candidate in Ghosi is currently in the lead, and the SP hasn’t wasted any time starting to celebrate. The SP is confidently alluding to the coming victory as a significant signal for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. These byelections are being widely followed because they are a key test for INDIA, the opposition coalition, as they take on the BJP-led NDA, the current government. The outcomes of these by-elections will have a big impact on the future state elections and the crucial Lok Sabha elections in 2024.

In several of the by-elections, the INDIA alliance has presented a unified face, with Ghosi in Uttar Pradesh and Dumri in Jharkhand standing out in particular. Out of the seven seats up for election, the BJP previously held three, the Samajwadi Party one, the CPI (M), JMM, and Congress won.
