African Union Joins G20 as India Hosts Summit

The African Union on Saturday has officially joined the member seat of the G20, marking a historic moment in the World Politics as it takes its seat within the global economic forum. 

This is one of the major development that came into G20 Summit and that are many more yet to be seen as a result of an invitation extended by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is hosting the G20 summit.

Dignitaries Arrive for G20 Summit

Distinguished leaders and figures from around the world wasted no time in attending the G20 Summit. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director and Chairman Kristalina Georgieva, and World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala were among the first to arrive. Their presence underscores the global importance of this gathering.

New Delhi Leaders Declaration Nears Completion

A crucial milestone in the G20 Summit’s preparations was the nearing completion of the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration. Amitabh Kant, India’s sherpa for the summit, announced that the declaration is almost ready. It will soon be presented to the leaders for their approval and consensus. Kant, speaking at a press conference ahead of the summit, emphasized that the declaration, also referred to as a joint communique, will incorporate the perspectives and voices of the global south and developing nations.

Bilateral Talks and Agreements

Before the summit officially kicked off, Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in bilateral discussions with his Bangladeshi counterpart, Sheikh Hasina. During these talks, the two leaders signed three crucial Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), including one focused on cooperation in Digital Payment mechanisms, highlighting the commitment to fostering collaboration in various areas.

US President Biden Joins the Summit

President of United States Joe Biden arrived in New Delhi, as one of member countries in the G20 Summit, embracing the importance of this international gathering. President Biden, accompanied by Janet Yellen, held a closed-door meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi upon his arrival, setting the stage for critical discussions.

Quad Alliance’s Focus on Indo-Pacific

In between of rising tensions in Indo-Pacific with increasing military activities in the Indo-Pacific region from Chinese government, the Quad alliance, comprising India, United States of America, Japan, and Australia, continues to focus on practical cooperation to take measures. All Quad countries are of one shared objective that is to ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific through reinforcing regional stability and security.

The Venue and Conclusion

The 2023 G20 Summit is 18th Summit of G20 that is taking place at the state-of-the-art Bharat Mandapam Convention Centre in New Delhi on September 9 and 10. The summit is poised to culminate with the adoption of a Leaders Declaration, encapsulating the outcomes and agreements reached during this important international gathering.
