Atiq Ahmed was taken to Prayagraj by Uttar Pradesh Police for questioning in the Umesh Pal murder case. He is to be remanded in judicial custody there. The police took him in custody from the Sabarmati Central Jail in Gujarat. When Prayagraj police took him in its custody he said, “I know their plan…They want to murder me.” Earlier his apartment had also been raided and two of his luxury cars have been impounded by the police.

On March 28, Atiq Ahmed was sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment by an MP-MLA court. He was convicted for the abduction and murder of Umesh Pal, a lawyer. Umesh was a key witness to the murder of BSP leader Raju Pal who was shot dead in February. This tragic incident occurred on Friday, February 24. In her statement, Umesh Pal’s wife Jaya revealed that Umesh was an eyewitness in the Raju Pal murder case, and she further alleged that Ahmed and his associates had kidnapped Umesh back in 2006, forcing him to provide a false statement in their favor in court. The sequence of events unfolded when Umesh and his police guards were returning home from a local court in Prayagraj. According to Jaya’s account, Ahmed’s sons, Guddu Muslim and Ghulam, along with others, ambushed them from behind. They opened fire and hurled crude bombs at them, resulting in Umesh and the police guard losing their lives. They were rushed to the hospital, where the doctors declared them dead
