BJP Accuses Karnataka’s Congress Government of Betrayal over Free Power Scheme and Electricity Tariff Hike

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a scathing attack on the Congress-led government in Karnataka, criticizing them for implementing a free electricity scheme while simultaneously increasing electricity tariffs. The BJP alleges that the government’s actions contradict their promise of providing free power to the people of Karnataka and accuses them of deception.

Background:

The Karnataka government recently introduced the ‘Gruha Jyoti’ scheme, which aimed to fulfill one of the Congress party’s election manifesto promises. However, the BJP contends that rather than delivering on the pledge of free electricity, the Congress government has allowed a significant increase in power tariffs, resulting in substantially higher electricity bills for consumers.

Details of the Controversy:

Shehzad Poonawala, the BJP National Spokesperson, took to Twitter to express his discontent with the Congress government’s actions. He pointed out that the power bills for consumers of the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) would rise by Rs 2.89 per unit, and tariffs across various categories would increase by 70 paise per unit. Poonawala criticized the government for imposing conditions on the “free electricity” scheme, such as using the customers’ monthly average consumption to determine the number of units eligible for free electricity. He highlighted that customers would only receive 10% more units than their monthly average usage, calling it a fraudulent move. Drawing a parallel with a similar incident in Himachal Pradesh, Poonawala accused the Congress of reneging on their promise of free electricity and betraying their commitment to providing Rs 1500 per month to women. He also questioned the party’s failure to fulfill the farmer loan waiver promise in Rajasthan.

BJP’s Allegations:

The BJP spokesperson criticized the Congress party, labeling them as untrustworthy and accusing them of engaging in deception. Poonawala highlighted the Congress party’s track record, emphasizing that they had previously raised electricity rates in Himachal Pradesh despite promising free power. He also expressed doubt that the media associated with Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party would hold them accountable for their actions. The BJP’s criticism of the Congress-led government in Karnataka centers around the implementation of a free electricity scheme while simultaneously increasing electricity tariffs. The BJP alleges that the government’s actions betray the trust of the people and highlight a pattern of broken promises. As political parties trade accusations, the fate of the ‘Gruha Jyoti’ scheme and its impact on the people of Karnataka remains uncertain.
