Calcutta High Court orders Inquiry into Shibpur violence

A NIA inquiry into the violence that occurred in Shibpur, Howrah district, during Ram Navami celebrations was ordered by the Calcutta High Court on Thursday.

Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the opposition, filed a public interest litigation (PIL), and a division bench presided over by acting chief justice TS Sivagnanam ordered that the West Bengal Police’s probe be transferred to the National probe Agency (NIA).

Adhikari asked for an NIA investigation into the alleged bomb explosion-related violence in the PIL.

The court ordered the state police to hand over to the federal government within two weeks all documents and CCTV footage associated with the case.

After that, the NIA received a directive to receive the documents from the Center.
