‘For your own profit…’ says Sushil Modi of Nitish Kumar’s release of Anand Mohan Singh

Sushil Kumar Modi of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) blasted Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday for releasing gangster-turned-politician Anand Mohan Singh, who was serving a life sentence for the murder of then-Gopalganj district magistrate G. Krishnaiah. The BJP spokesperson claimed that the Kumar regime changed the Bihar Prison Manual, 2012, for “his own benefit.”

CM Nitish Kumar changed the law in 2016 and introduced a section stating that people convicted of killing a government official will never be eligible for remission. He has now changed the law once more for your own advantage in winning the election, Sushil Modi stated.

On Monday, the Bihar government announced the release of 27 prisoners, among them the former lawmaker Anand Mohan Singh. According to a notification from the state’s law department, “In light of the Bihar state sentence remission council meeting on April 20, 2023, the decision was taken for the release of prisoners having served an actual sentence of 14 years or a sentence of 20 years with remission.”

In 2007, a trial court sentenced the gangster-turned-politician to death for the murder of G. Krishnaiah, a 1985-batch IAS official from Mahbubnagar in present-day Telangana. However, the Patna High Court modified his sentence to life imprisonment. According to a provision in the Bihar Prison Manual, anyone convicted of killing a government employee will never be eligible for remission. On April 10, the Bihar government lifted this condition, allowing Mohan to be released.

Meanwhile, the wife of the former IAS officer murdered by Mohan lashed out on Tuesday at the Nitish Kumar government.  Bihar has caste politics. Because he (Anand Mohan) is a Rajput, he will receive Rajput votes, which is why he is being released from jail; otherwise, why bring a criminal? “He will be given an election ticket in order to bring Rajput votes,” she informed ANI.
