On Wednesday, Abhishek Banerjee, the national general secretary of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), stated that “if Rahul is banned as an MP for his statements about ‘Modi surname, then why was same action not taken against PM Modi over his ‘didi o didi’ remark?”
During a protest held in West Bengal at the Shahid Minar Grounds, Banerjee stated that “when the Prime Minister made those words, they harmed the sensibilities of women in West Bengal, and their action should be taken against PM Modi.”
Abhishek was making a reference to the comments made by PM Modi during the Bengal Assembly Elections in the year 2021. During that election, the PM insulted Mamta Banerjee during his polls campaign by stating “didi o didi.”
Moreover, Banerjee asked disciplinary action be taken against Suvendu Adhikari of the BJP for “insulting a lady minister from the tribal group.” He was alluding to video footage that was released a year ago in which Adhikari can be heard telling a group of people that Debnath Hansda and Birbaha Hansda are children and that their place is beneath his shoe.
Banerjee questioned why there was no action taken against Suvendu despite the fact that he had insulted Birbaha Hansda by stating that their position should be under his shoes.
A court in Surat, Gujarat, convicted Rahul Gandhi of criminal defamation for a remark he made in 2019 while he was campaigning in Karnataka in advance of the state elections. As a result of this conviction, Rahul Gandhi was disqualified from his position as a Member of Parliament (MP). Rahul claimed, while speaking at a rally in Kolar, that “all thieves have the common surname, Modi.”
