External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar inaugurated the Indian Embassy in the Dominican Republic on April 28 in the presence of the Dominican Republic’s Vice President, Raquel Pena.
In May 1999, India and the Dominican Republic established diplomatic ties, and in May 2001, they signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Santo Domingo agreeing to regular Foreign Office discussions.
The two countries established diplomatic relations in 1999 and will celebrate a quarter-century anniversary next year. The EAM further expressed optimism that the presence of the Resident Embassy will usher in a new age of collaboration and contribute to strengthening bilateral, regional, and global ties.
He remarked at the occasion, “Today is a very proud day for India and for the relationship between India and the Dominican Republic. I have the honor of publicly launching the embassy that we have created here. Your presence (Vice President of the Dominican Republic) demonstrates the Dominican Government’s importance on the issue. The creation of this embassy will usher in a new phase of our collaboration. We intend to take this relationship to new heights. We certainly look forward to continuing high-level contacts between our two countries.”
This visit to the Dominican Republic is the first high-level visit from India since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1999.
“In the two decades that have passed, we can already see that diplomatic relations and having a Resident Embassy have made a billion dollars today. Our political connections are very warm and friendly, and we work closely with multilateral organizations, particularly the United Nations. We want this relationship to expand in its dimensions, facets, and intensity – whether through increased commerce, bigger investment, more exchanges, or firms here or in India. These are all goals we’ve set for ourselves,” Mr. Jaishankar remarked.
Mr. Jaishankar also applauded Dominican Republic leaders for attending the Indian Embassy’s inauguration.
