Josep Borrell, the EU foreign policy chief, called for action on behalf of Indian refined products made from Russian crude on Tuesday. Indian external affairs minister S Jaishankar for taking advice from EU council regulations.
Indian external affairs minister S Jai Shankar addressed the media during the press conference on the EU-India trade and technology council at EU headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, on Tuesday.
Jai Shankar said that according to EU Council regulation, Russian crude is substantially developed in third countries and is not modified in Russia. I would like to request that you look at Council Regulation 833/2014 Act.
According to the EU’s foreign policy chief, Borrell wants the bloc to act on refined crude oil products coming from India, which are actually made from Russian crude oil, in an interview with the Financial Times.
Both Borrell and Jai Shankar met in Brussels at Trade Technology. The EU executive vice president told Margrethe Vestager that “there is no doubt that the authorization was legal”. We, the EU and India, discuss and work as friends, not competitors.
Jaishanker met with Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and Union Minister of State for Entrepreneurship, Skill Development, Electronics, and Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar.
Jai Shankar arrived on Monday after covering Bangladesh, Sweden, and Belgium. They defended India’s imports from Russia, indirectly criticising the West for pressuring New Delhi to minimise trade with Russian imports and exports. He was also wounded by the behaviour of Europe, which chose to prioritise its own needs at the same time as India asked for something else.
In comparison to Europe’s trade, Germany had less than that, with a turnover of USD 12–13 billion, given the set of demands from Russia stated by the German counterpart Annalena Baerbock during the press conference.
