Jharsuguda Bypoll: Heavy Security Deployed as Political Parties

Jharsuguda, a small town in western Odisha, has been put under tight security ahead of the upcoming bypoll for the Jharsuguda assembly constituency. The bypoll has been necessitated by the death of sitting MLA Naba Kishore Das in April due to COVID-19.

The district administration has deployed a large number of police personnel in the town to maintain law and order during the bypoll. The town has been divided into several sectors, with each sector being manned by a team of police personnel. Checkpoints have been set up at all entry and exit points of the town, and vehicles are being checked thoroughly.

Apart from the police personnel, paramilitary forces have also been deployed in the town to ensure a smooth and peaceful election. The district administration has also identified several sensitive polling booths where additional security measures will be taken.

Several political parties, including the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), are contesting the bypoll. The Congress, however, has decided not to field a candidate and has extended support to the BJD candidate.

The Jharsuguda assembly constituency has a significant tribal population, and issues concerning tribals are likely to play a significant role in the bypoll. The ruling BJD has promised to address the grievances of the tribal population, while the BJP has accused the government of neglecting the development of the region.

The bypoll is being seen as a litmus test for the ruling BJD, which is seeking to retain the seat. The BJP, on the other hand, is hoping to make significant gains in the region ahead of the 2024 general elections.

The district administration has urged voters to come out in large numbers and exercise their franchise. The polling will take place on May 16, and the results will be declared on May 19.
