Kamal Haasan seeking vote for another party’s symbol, talks about upcoming bypolls

Kamal Haasan signified that national interest is beyond party or symbols. He also said he knows with whom he should join hands to safeguard that. Hassan, an actor,  is also the founder of Makkal Needhi Maiam. He has been campaigning for DMK-Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) candidate EVKS Elangovan at Erode on the face of the bypoll. The bypoll will be held on February 27 and the votes will be counted on 2nd of March.

Talking about his campaign, Haasan mentioned that this was the first time he is seeking votes for another party. He also said that he wants the country to remain secular. Since the Congress party has done a lot of work, he has begun to support Congress leader Elangovan.

Haasan is aware of the criticism that he will have to deal with after supporting a candidate from a different party. However, Haasan said that his principle is still the same and it is time to renounce differences to stand together for secularism.

While talking about his struggles he had faced in the past, especially during his movie ‘Vishwaroopam’ in 2013, he said he rejected offers of help from DMK and faced every challenge on his own. In such light, he says, the claim that he supported the DMK alliance for personal merit is dismissed.

Haasan campaigned in an open van with the Congress candidate. In his campaign, he said that he believes the Erode (East) bypoll result will be a turning point for the country and will determine the direction of the country’s growth and how Tamil Nadu will act as a leader to the other states.

Elangovan is the great-grandson of rationalist leader EVR Periyar and father of Congress MLA Thirumahan Everaa, whose death created the need for this bypoll, is contesting against K S Thennarasu from the AIADMK.
