KCR stifles dissent by using preventive detentions and house arrests: Oppn

When senior ministers visit their constituencies, Congress leaders in Telangana claim that the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government arbitrarily places them under house arrest in an effort to maintain law and order. They claimed that on August 14, during the visit of minister K T Rama Rao, all Congress leaders in the Kamareddy and Yellareddy Assembly constituencies were placed under preventive custody. If such preventive detentions did occur, the ruling party has claimed that they were done so to preserve order.

The Congress has called attention to a large number of these incidents. The BRS administration has taken a feudalistic turn. Working with all parties is a fundamental characteristic of democracy. Here, this is not the case. Forget about protesting; even the right to free speech is not available to opposition leaders, Vikramarka said.
Ministers should meet members of the local public while on their tours, he continued. Instead, police lock the gates to the homes of local Congress leaders prior to a minister’s visit and remain there until the minister departs, preventing the Congress leaders from leaving their homes. This administration has taken to repressing the opposition.
As a result, Sharmila sat on a daylong fast at her home in Hyderabad on Friday. Sharmila questioned whether her “house arrest” was appropriate.
According to BRS spokesperson Dasoju Sravan Kumar, Telangana does not support vengeful politics, in contrast to many BJP-ruled states. K Chandrashekar Rao, the chief minister, opposes stifling dissent or opposing viewpoints.
