Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday, launched  India’s first water metro in Kochi and flagged off Kerala’s inaugural Vande Bharat train from Thiruvananthapuram, which would go through 11 districts.

On Tuesday morning, the Prime Minister arrived in Thiruvananthapuram to a warm reception. He then departed for the main train station. Arif Mohammed Khan, the governor of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan, the state minister, and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor were there when the PM chatted with the students aboard the train.

Many have suggested the Vande Bharat Express as an alternative to the LDF government’s planned semi-high-speed rail route, SilverLine, which would link the state capital with Kerala’s northernmost Kasaragod district.

The PM stood on the footboard of his car the whole nearly six-kilometer trip from the airport to the train station, waving to the people by the roadside as they showered him with flowers.

After he has waved the train off, he will launch a variety of further construction initiatives, including the Kochi Water Metro service, from the Kerala Central Stadium.
