Kozhikode, Kerala: The Kerala Health Department issued a Nipah virus alert in Kozhikode district on Monday, responding to two tragic deaths suspected to be linked to the deadly virus. This development has sent shockwaves through the region, as residents recall the Nipah outbreak in 2018 that claimed 17 lives, including that of a heroic nurse.
An official statement from Health Minister Veena George confirmed the alert, revealing that it was prompted by the recent fatalities at a private hospital in Kozhikode. “Nipah is suspected.A high-level meeting was convened to evaluate the situation,” said the release.
While the clinical confirmation of the virus is pending, the health department is leaving no stone unturned in taking precautionary measures. The memories of the 2018 outbreak, which left the community in anguish, have spurred a rapid response to ensure the safety of the population.
Nipah Virus
Nipah virus, first reported in Kozhikode in 2018, remains etched in the collective memory. It claimed 17 lives, including a dedicated nurse who had valiantly treated one of the patients. In 2019, a confirmed case was reported in Ernakulam, but fortunately, there were no fatalities. However, in September 2021, the virus resurfaced in the district, tragically taking the life of a 12-year-old boy.
The Nipah virus is a zoonotic pathogen, primarily transmitted from animals to humans, with the possibility of human-to-human transmission in close contact situations. Fruit bats, commonly found in the region, are known to be natural carriers of the virus.
Local health authorities are leaving no room for complacency this time. They have swiftly initiated preventive measures, including setting up quarantine facilities and deploying medical teams to the affected area. Residents are being advised to maintain strict hygiene practices and avoid contact with sick animals, especially bats, which can serve as carriers.
Furthermore, a public awareness campaign has been launched to educate residents about the symptoms of Nipah virus, including fever, headache, dizziness, vomiting and breathing difficulties. Health officials are urging anyone experiencing these symptoms to seek immediate medical attention.
Hospitals in Kozhikode have been put on high alert, equipped with the necessary protective gear to handle potential Nipah virus cases. Isolation wards have been established to isolate and treat infected patients.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, in coordination with the World Health Organization (WHO) and other relevant agencies. The immediate goal is to contain the spread and prevent further loss of life.
