The Congress party in India celebrates its recent victory in the Karnataka state assembly elections. The party secured a historic win, projected to secure 136 seats in the assembly. The Bharat Jodo Yatra (BJY), led by Rahul Gandhi, played a significant role in the party’s success. The yatra engaged with local communities and listened to their concerns. Gandhi and party leaders journeyed over 500 km in Karnataka, starting from Gundlupet and concluding in Raichur district. Sonia Gandhi also participated in the yatra. It covered 20 assembly seats in two phases between September 30 and October 19, spanning seven districts.

Congress won 118 seats and leads on 18 seats, while BJP secured 53 seats and leads on 11. JD-S won 18 seats and leads on two. Congress won 5 seats in the 2018 yatra-covered seats, now leading on 15, while JD-S won 6 and BJP won 9 in 2018.

The yatra unified the party, revitalized the cadre, and shaped the narrative for the Karnataka elections. Jairam Ramesh, Congress general secretary, stated the yatra finalized the party’s manifesto through conversations with Karnataka people.

Congress focused on corruption, resonating with voters despite BJP’s aggressive campaign. The Karnataka assembly election results are significant for both parties. Karnataka is a gateway to the south and a bellwether for national elections. Congress gains a much-needed boost after struggling in national politics. The party aims to replicate success in other states ahead of 2024 national elections.
