RAPIDX: India’s First Regional Train Service to Commence Operations on a 17 km Section

India’s highly anticipated regional train service, RAPIDX, is set to begin operations this month on a 17 km-long section. The inaugural stretch, equipped with five stations, marks a significant milestone in the development of the Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) project. The RAPIDX service, designed for high-speed travel, aims to revolutionize regional transportation in the National Capital Region (NCR).

Section Inauguration:

The recently completed section of RAPIDX, spanning 17 km, includes stations at Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Guldhar, Duhai, and Duhai depot. According to a senior government official, all the stations have been fully prepared and are ready for operations. This development signifies a significant step forward in the realization of the RRTS project, which commenced construction in June 2019.

RRTS Expansion:

Following the commencement of the priority section, the next 25 km-long stretch, consisting of stations at Muradnagar, Modi Nagar South, Modi Nagar North, and Meerut South, is scheduled for commissioning. The ultimate objective of the RRTS project is to provide seamless connectivity along the 82 km-long Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut route by 2025.

High-Speed Operation:

RAPIDX, as part of the RRTS project, promises to deliver efficient and high-speed transportation for commuters. Trains on the RRTS are anticipated to achieve operational speeds of up to 160 km/h. This increased velocity will significantly reduce travel time and enhance connectivity within the NCR, benefitting thousands of passengers daily.

Funding and Implementation:

The RRTS project, estimated to cost Rs 30,274 crore, has been financially supported by organizations such as the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), and New Development Bank (NDB).

The RAPIDX Experience:

RAPIDX trains have been aptly named to ensure ease of pronunciation in multiple languages while signifying speed, progress, and the application of next-generation technology. The addition of “X” represents youth, optimism, and energy. Notably, the RAPIDX service will include a dedicated women’s coach positioned immediately after the premium coach on every train traveling from Meerut to Delhi. This reserved coach will accommodate up to 72 passengers and feature essential amenities, including a diaper-changing station at each station. To facilitate easy identification, proper signage will be prominently displayed at the platform level and train door openings.

The imminent commencement of operations on the 17 km section of RAPIDX heralds a new era in regional train travel in India. The RRTS project, with its high-speed and efficient transportation system, aims to transform the National Capital Region’s connectivity landscape. As the RRTS expands and more sections are commissioned, the RAPIDX service will undoubtedly revolutionize the way people commute, offering convenience, comfort, and reliability for passengers traveling within the NCR.
