11 Indian teams selected for HERC 2023. These teams including three High School groups will be participating in the distinguished ‘NASA Human Exploration Rover Challenge’ (HERC) 2023. This prestigious event will be taking place in the United States of America this very month. These 11 Indian teams are among 61 other teams from all over the world. The Indian teams will be representing India on an International level. They will get a chance to go to the American agency’s space & rocket Centre in Huntsville, Alabama, US. Over there, the teams will be participating in a three-day long competition from 20-22 April.
This challenge organized by the HERC has set certain criteria as well as ground rules for each team. All the teams will have to design, develop, build and test human-powered rovers. The rovers designed by the teams should be able to travel across challenging terrain. They should also use a task tool for the completion of various tasks arranged by HERC.
Teams selected from India
The teams have been made and selected from a wide array of colleges and universities. These include, Amity University Noida, Birla Institute of Technology and Science Rajasthan, Vellore Institute of Technology Tamil Nadu and many others. Teams have been made from schools as well, such as Young Tinker Educational Foundation, Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Out of these, VIT, Vellore, HITS, Chennai, BITS, Amity Noida, KIET Group of Institutions, Uttar Pradesh were featured in the 2022 challenge as well.
Criteria for judgement of teams
According to NASA, each team will be judged on the basis of their design and assembly of the rover. The team will be judged on the rover’s ability to travel and solve a set of 10 obstacles and complete 5 tasks. NASA mentioned in a statement, “As part of the competition, rover entries are tested to ensure they would fit into a lander storage area, a maximum 5 feet long by 5 feet tall by 5 feet in volume”.
