Indian Govt. introducing GPS-based Toll system

Indian Govt. introducing GPS-based Toll system. The Indian Government is planning on introducing a new toll collection method. Instead of the normal toll booths, the Indian Government has decided to use new technologies and implement GPS-based toll collection systems. This new method of toll collection will be completely established in the next 6 months. This is being done by the Government to replace the already existing highway toll plazas in the country. The Union Minister, Nitin Gadkari spoke about changing the toll plaza system to a GPS-based method on Friday, 24 March, 2023.

Word from Union Minister Nitin Gadkari

The move by the Government of India aims at reducing the traffic congestion that takes place in normal toll plazas. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari also added that the Indian Government also wants to go through with this plan to charge motorists for the exact distance travelled on the highways. While addressing an event organized by the industry body CII, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari further mentioned that the state-owned NHAI’s toll revenue is currently Rs. 40,000 crores and it is going to go up to Rs. 140 lakh crores in the next 2-3 years. Mr. Gadkari also added, “The government is looking at new technologies including GPS-based toll systems to replace toll plazas in the country. We will bring new technology in six months.”

For the implementation of this GPS-based toll system, the ministry of road transport and highways is conducting a pilot project for the automatic number plate recognition system. This method is being tested to automatically collect tolls without stopping the vehicles. The automated system also includes automatic number plate reader cameras. However, there has definitely been a decline in the waiting time recorded at the toll plazas. Earlier, in 2018-19 the average waiting at toll plazas was 8 minutes. Now, 2021-22, the waiting time had drastically come down to 47 seconds. For more such updates and important headlines, subscribe to STMN News.
