The well-known toy manufacturer Mattel has unveiled the first Barbie doll that symbolizes people with Down syndrome. The doll accurately depicts the condition thanks to the collaboration with the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS). The NDSS provided design direction for Barbie, and the doll’s attire and accessories have unique significance. Butterflies and the blue and yellow hues on the doll’s outfit are emblems and hues connected to Down syndrome awareness. Barbie’s necklace features three chevrons to symbolize the fact that persons with Down syndrome have three copies of the 21st chromosome. The doll is also decked out in ankle-foot orthotics, which some kids with Down syndrome need.
The CEO and President of NDSS, Kandi Pickard, expressed her appreciation for the saying that it means a lot for their community as they can now play with a doll that represents them. She added that the Barbie serves as a reminder of the power of representation. There are about 6,000 kids born with Down syndrome each year in the United States, making it the most prevalent chromosomal disorder.
The 2023 Fashionistas collection from Mattel includes the Barbie doll that represents people with Down syndrome in an effort to promote inclusivity and diversity. The line has previously introduced dolls with vitiligo, a Ken doll with a prosthetic leg, and a Barbie with hearing aids.
Lisa McKnight, Executive Vice President, and Global Head of Barbie and Dolls at Mattel, expressed pride in introducing a Barbie doll with Down syndrome to reflect the world and celebrate inclusion through play. The collaboration between Mattel and NDSS is an important step in promoting diversity and inclusivity in toys and play, representing people of different abilities and backgrounds.
