Observers from the United Nations (UN) have recently made comments on the state of Manipur that India has vehemently rejected. India has called them “unwarranted, presumptive, and misleading.” The Indian government strongly stated that things are still stable in Manipur and pledged to take the necessary actions.
The Indian delegation conveyed India’s perspective on the matter through a note verbale sent to the Special Procedures Branch of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. The note reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the region, emphasizing the tranquil and secure conditions in Manipur.
The note also emphasized that “the Government is also committed to protecting the human rights of the people of India, including the people of Manipur.”
India’s Permanent Mission to the UN and other international organizations in Geneva strongly criticized the comments made by UN experts. The mission condemned the UN news release, labeling it as “unwarranted, presumptive, and misleading.” Additionally, it chastised the publication for demonstrating a lack of understanding regarding the circumstances in Manipur.
UN experts who expressed alarm about claims of “serious human rights violations and abuses” in Manipur serve as the backdrop for India’s response. Sexual assault, extrajudicial killings, property destruction, eviction, torture, and other ill-treatment are some of the alleged infractions. The Indian government’s position demonstrates its dedication to upholding the human rights of its citizens.
